An old cemetery in our neighborhood ...

Stirling Steeple Peter Groover Robert the Bruce

Preserving a piece of history

The Holly Springs Memorial Association, guardians of the Holly Springs Cemetery in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, is searching for descendants of people buried at the cemetery.

The cemetery certainly has a long history of serving Cobb County families. The earliest known burial is in1841 for a Revolutional War Veteran, Peter Groover, of the North Carolina Militia. This grave site has been recognized and marked by the Sons of the American Revolution

Pioneer Cobb County families with at least ten sites identified are: Bannister, Berry, Blackwell, Brasill, Burton, Clackum, Dodgen, Dunn, Groover, Hamby, Haygood, Henry, King, McCleskey, Mitchell, Murdoch, Neese, Richardson, and Sullivan.

Over 130 family names are listed for the cemetery, totaling nearly 600 graves. 58 of these were buried in the 1800s.

In the 1980s, the Holly Springs Memorial Association was registered with the Secretary of State of Georgia as a non-profit organization, and this registration has been maintained.

The cemetery is not among the abandoned cemeteries (yet), but there is an urgent need to identify additional descendants of families interred here so that we can better maintain the grounds.
